This senior level software design engineer will be a member of the development team that creates embedded software to control existing and new oscilloscope designs. This software design engineer will develop calibration procedures, algorithms and code for existing and new hardware designs. This software design engineer will participate in the sustaining activities of existing products and the development of new products for Tektronix oscilloscopes to ensure that these products meet manufacturing and product specifications.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop a working knowledge of current and future hardware product specifications and architectures.

  • Development of algorithms and software to calibrate/compensate the hardware to meet published product specifications, including the development of software to test the design.

  • Work closely with oscilloscope electrical engineers to review and make recommendations to circuit designs in order to assure the product can be calibrated/compensated to instrument specifications.

  • Calibration software is developed using C/C and is an integral part of the oscilloscope software.

  • Work with manufacturing test engineering to calibrate/compensate instruments efficiently, repeatable and traceable to the National Bureau of Standards (NBS).

  • Defining and writing instrumentation software that provides critical measurements for embedded design products that address current and emerging digital and RF design technologies in the computer and communications industries.

  • Working with engineering team members and marketing to research and understand customer needs and then develop the feature set and specifications that define the new products.

  • Participate in the engineering design, debug and test of new algorithms and software.


The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and experience:


  • BS/MS/PHD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, related discipline, or equivalent experience.

  • 8 years of successful design experience.

  • 4 years’ experience using C , C and assembly language(s).

  • Understanding of multithreading, memory management, object oriented programming, and real-time operating system concepts.

  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills.

  • Good technical documentation skills.


  • Knowledge of programming in Linux and/or Windows run-time environments.

  • Understanding of precision electronics instruments, especially oscilloscopes.

  • Understanding of various electronics accuracy specifications and how to make these measurements.

  • The ability to read electronics schematics and understand basic analog circuits.

  • Technical focus on the development of real-time, embedded control of hardware interfaces.

  • Technical expertise in digital signal processing (DSP), including frequency domain related classes.

  • Familiarity with Qt.

  • Familiarity with Verilog or VHDL.

  • Familiarity with MATLAB and MathCAD is a plus.

  • Statistics: Basic terms: Mean, Standard Deviation, etc.; Random vs Deterministic PDF, CDF, common distributions like Uniform, Gaussian Stationarity.

  • Engineering tools & techniques: Version control, Defect tracking, Requirements Definition and product development models (e.g. Waterfall, Agile/Scrum).
