Minimum/Required Qualifications BS in horticulture, genetics, plant pathology, entomology, or closely related field. A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Technical experience using a microscope. Experience with field plot management, greenhouse and laboratory work. Ability to summarize and present research methods and results. Excellent oral and written communications. Position Duties 25% Laboratory Research Culture of aphids and fungi, and histopathology. Develop novel approaches for the investigation of how plants are infected by E. typhina and the role aphids may play in the infection process. Successfully complete and maintain appropriate farm, lab and greenhouse safety training and certifications. 35% Greenhouse Management Plant infection trials, as well as growth and maintenance of plant resources. Develop a protocol for infecting plants with Epichloe, as a prerequisite to the initiation of breeding programs for developing choke resistant cultivars. 35% Field Research Field surveys, and observations of Epichloe development under field conditions. Manage Barley Yellow Dwarf field plots to look at the effect of viruses on different cultivars of tall fescue, fine fescue, orchardgrass, and perennial ryegrass. 5% Supervision Plan, assign, approve and hire/fire student workers and/or temporary employees. This position is in a federal building and the incumbent must successfully obtain the appropriate security clearance within 90 days of the employment start date.
