Position Summary

University Housing is an auxiliary educational and business enterprise of the university

with an annual budget of approximately 20 million dollars. The Food service program

provides board and cash operations services to residents, campus and conference


This position manages and directs the daily production of the Catering Kitchen cooking

staff. The Sous Chef ensures high culinary standards are followed, food production

schedules are met, and food safety and sanitation is maintained. This position supervises

a staff of 8 classified staff, student and temporary employees and reports

directly to the Catering Kitchen Chef/Manager.

Minimum Requirements

• 2 year degree from an accredited culinary program

• 3 years experience cooking in a high volume facility or equivalent experience as a lead cook or supervisor in a university, hospital, restaurant or hotel banquet environment.

• Experience directing and assigning kitchen staff duties.

This position must be able to work occasional nights and/or weekends to fulfill special projects and events.

This position is required to obtain a food handler's permit and OLCC servers permit.

This position will require a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain UO Drivers Certification.

Professional Competencies

• Demonstrated ability and creativity in all aspects of the culinary arts

• Demonstrated ability or commitment to working with students and staff from diverse backgrounds.

• Knowledgeable in the use of commercial kitchen production equipment.

• Able to frequently lift 25lbs and to stand for long periods of time.

Preferred Qualifications

• ACF Culinary certification or equivalent certification of Chef de Cuisine or higher preferred

• Supervisory experience in high volume restaurant, or college/university settings, or with a unionized work force.

• HACCP Certification or significant experience working within a HACCP plan.

• Experience with centralized production using Cook-Chill and Reduced Oxygen Packing methods.
