Participates w/ the Health Care Team in delivering quality health care to patients in a manner which reflects Kaiser Permanente's mission, vision, & values while supporting the Labor Management Partnership (LMP) principles & practice. Provides support & assistance to the patient & Health Care Team to promote population-based care, continuity of the care, customer satisfaction & self-care. The Surgical Technologist performs in the scrub role during surgical procedures & coordinates other activities w/ other OR professionals. The OR Specialty Lead Tech II, under the supervision of the OR manager, coordinates & assists w/ all levels of nursing care being provided to a group of patients w/in one surgical subspecialty during the period of one working shift. In addition to these responsible of the Lead Tech II all staff tech responsibilities.
Essential Functions: - Practice standards of performance: Complies w/ shift, unit & organizational policies & procedures including reliability & attendance standards. Monitors & takes corrective action to prevent recurring absences. Returns promptly from breaks & schedules them to provide adequate coverage. Restricts personal business to non-patient care areas during break times. Complies w/ Kaiser Permanente's timekeeping policy to accurately reflect productive time worked. Takes responsibility to keep informed of organizational policies & current information as provided by employer through multiple avenues. Complies w/ contractual responsibilities related to work schedule. Participates in unit Quality Assurance Programs. Communications w/ patient, family & other staff in a professional & courteous manner. Obtains & demonstrates the skills & knowledge needed to provide appropriate population based & culturally sensitive care to patients & families through education, training & experience. Participates in accurate pre-operative briefing & time out. Provides continuous re-assement through the intra operative period. - Planning Standard of Performance: Utilizes knowledge of type of procedure to plan for appropriate set up. Obtains & demonstrates the skills & knowledge needed to provide age appropriate care to patients through education, training, & experience. - Implementation Standard of Performance: Initiates appropriate measures based on protocol for the management of the intra-operative patient. Applies principles of aseptic technique. Evaluates sterile packs & supplies. Provides a well organized sterile area. Is aware of procedure's progression & anticipates the needs of the team, observing sterile technique at all times. Performs all necessary procedures correctly to ensure patient safety intra operatively. Applies & assists w/ the principles of correct body alignment in positioning & transferring patients. Examines unused equipment & instruments for gross containmination & transports covered used instruments to utility room. Responsible for sterile core actives, able to prioritize duties: Completion of picking case carts, restocking, & reordering supplies as needed, assisting w/ O.R. room needs as necessary. Assists w/ appropriate measures in emergency situations. Assists Circulator in preparation for the next scheduled case. Intitates & facilitates room turnovers: Light housekeeping duties, procurement of equipment, supplies & X-Rays. Restocking of unused supplies & equipment. Participates in the reprocessing process. - Leadership Standards of Performance: The Specialty Lead Tech will assist in the coordination of specialty team personnel. May assist in the interviewing process of applicants for posted positions & make recommendations to the manager. Supports organizational goals & objectives. May provide input into staff evaluations upon request. Monitors performance of staff & provides documentation of performance problems to the manager. Assures that employees providing service have the knowledge & skills required to provided age appropriate care to patients & families through education, training. Or experience. Provides input into the development & maintenance of staffing patterns for the patient care unit & helps monitor day to day staffing & utilization of nursing resources. Participates & provides input for staff meetings under the direction of the manager. Participates in & promotes quality assessment & improvement activities. - Resource Utilization Standard of Performance: The Specialty Lead Tech II will contribute to overall functioning of the unit by monitoring resources. Identifies & communicates to the manager, any systems problems that interfere w/ effective patient care. Conveys risk situations to the safety officer & manager. Keeps department updated on monthly basis current projects in progress. Participates & gives input into trend analysis for the operational budget as needed. Assists w/ materials management, ensuring availability of supplies as needed for the specific sub-specialty. Provides direction during emergency situations as delegated. Acts as resource for unit staff. Participates in orientation & development of orientation plan. - Patient Care Standars of Performance: The specialty Lead Tech II will actively participate in providing &/or facilitating patient care based on age appropriate needs. Participates in the development & implementation of standards of patient care, policies, & procedures & protocols. Coordinates & participates in the delivery of patient care for a specific sup-specialty: Assesses needs & priorities of patient. Assists in the implementation of nursing care. Evaluates effectiveness of nursing care. Interacts w/ the surgeon for purposes of problem-solving & communicating procedural needs. Develops, updates, & maintains surgeon's preference cards in a timely manner, w/ assistance, of the data analysts. Functions w/in expected behavior st&ards of Staff tech as participating in role. - The Specialty Lead Tech II will assist w/ the educating of other health care professionals. Identifies educational & specialty needs w/ the surgeon. W/ the manager & education coordinator, assists in the development of staff in-service related to sub-specialty. Orients staff to the sub-specialty. Serves as a resource to other departments in area of specialty. - Professional Responsibilty: Participates in professional activities. Supports departmental & organizational philosophy, goals, objectives, policies & procedures. Participates in meetings, special projects, & committees as designated. Supports &/or participates in research programs approved by the Department of Nursing as designated. Promotes interdepartmental & intradepartmental communications. Fosters good public relations. Assumes responsibility for own continuing education & development. Provides inservice to staff w/in 30 days of Kaiser sponsored conferences. - Applies knowledge of organizational expectations of personnel policies & procedures. Follows appropriate policies & procedures for use of time in work environment, including absenteeism & tardiness. Returns promptly from breaks & schedules them in concert w/ coworkers to provide appropriate coverage of unit & patient care activities. Consistently on time & ready to work at start of shift & has assignments completed at end of shift. Maintains confidentiality of all patient & organizational records; releases information according to established policy/procedure. Models department behavior standards. Restricts personal business to non-patient care areas during break times. Identifies self by wearing a name tag & verbally introducing self by name, title, &/or department. Addresses members w/ courtesy & respect. Provides assistance to members or connect member w/ appropriate person when needed. Applies same courtesy standards to members on the telephone as in person. Adheres to hospital & unit specific policies & standards. During downtime, responds to lifting & turnover overhead pages.
Qualifications: Basic Qualifications: Experience - One (1) to two (2) years of scrubbing experience in all surgical procedures in inpatient or ambulatory O.R. setting. - One (1) to two (2) years of scrubbing experience and able to scrub all surgical procedures. Education - Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technology. License, Certification, Registration - Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers required upon hire/transfer. - AST (Association of Surgical Technology) Certification.
Additional Requirements: - Knowledge of sterile core area. - Knowledge of sterile technique; operating room procedures and equipment; dexterity with hands; effective relationships with people; ability to exercise good judgment and discipline. - Able to follow instruction.
Preferred Qualifications: - Three (3) to five (5) years of scrubbing experience in all surgical procedures in inpatient and ambulatory O.R. setting. - CST- must be certified to qualify to be a Tech II. - Ability to rotate through sterile core area. - Clean and reprocess instruments, stock supplies, and pick case carts.
