A specialist in Nephrology provides direct comprehensive patient care to adolescents and adults with acute and chronic medical conditions characterized by hypertension and/or kidney disease, and serves as a consultant to other physicians. A subspecialist in Nephrology is expert in history taking, physical examination, text interpretation, selected diagnostic procedures (including renal biopsy, dialysis catheter placement, and all modalities of dialysis), patient counseling, differential diagnosis and medical therapeutics in the broad range of nephrologic disorders. The nephrologist is also expert in the interactions of renal processes with normal and disordered functions of the other organ systems.
As assigned by the section Chief, Clinical Duties for the position will include: 1) Continuity outpatient clinics. The incumbent manages patients for continuity nephrology practice in the VA Renal Clinic 2) Precepting residents and fellows in clinic and in dialysis units 3) Inpatient nephrology consult service attending providing comprehensive consultative and dialysis support to all inpatient service 4) Indirect patient care: returning telephone calls, responding to patient secure messages, reviewing and renewing prescriptions, reviewing laboratory and imaging data, communicating results to patients, and implementing improved quality in systems delivery.

Basic Requirements: * United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. * Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. * Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. * Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. * Proficiency in spoken and written English. * Physical requirements outlined below. Preferred Experience: Eligible to take, or have passed, the certifying examination in Nephrology of the American Board of Internal Medicine
