The incumbent serves as a clinic patient advocate by answering patient inquiries and resolving patient concerns at a local level. This Part-Time Food Service Worker position is assigned to the Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) through the VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) at the campus in Portland, OR.

The Food Service Worker performs work which requires more specialized procedures. This announcement is not intended to cover all of the duties, qualifications, or responsibilities of this position. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Load and operates dishwashing, pot washing and cart washing machines, storing sanitized dishes and pots and pans following proper safety and sanitation procedures.
  • Applies the knowledge of regular and modified diets and special procedures in serving patients.
  • Identifies obvious discrepancies on the prescribed diet and replenishes food items based on supervisory approval and appropriate documentation.
  • Assemble regular and modified hot and cold food items according to standardized procedures and the tray ticket.
  • Sets up, operates, breaks down, and cleans all equipment assigned to the food service area.
  • Provide accurate tray delivery and pick up in a timely manner and provides proper documentation to ensure therapeutic compliance.
  • Transport food carts to and from patient wards and delivers and picks up patient trays according to established procedures.
  • Report patient's comments and complaints to food service supervisor/appropriate personnel.
  • Deliver nourishments to patient's bedside and ward refrigerators according to established procedures.
  • Write comments on delivery sheets regarding patient acceptance, leftovers, or unused food items.
  • Transport food carts to truck area, assist in loading and unloading transport cars onto delivery truck in Transports food carts to truck area.
  • Clean all assigned work areas and equipment in service, i.e. work involves cleaning duties such as clearing and wiping tables, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing floors using a floor machine, scraping and washing dishes/pots and pans, cleaning all equipment used in food service, walk-in refrigerators, walls/window sills and sanitizing trash containers.
  • Performs heavy cleaning such as walls, cooking equipment, tray line equipment and other cleaning tasks in order to maintain a high standard of sanitation throughout the service.

QUALIFICATIONS: Your background must demonstrate experience in a variety of food service related duties such as setting up dining room tables, and side service stands with hot and cold food items; set up and operate commercial food service equipment; deliver and retrieve meals trays; keeps working areas clean and organized; working knowledge of sanitation and food safety standards; good communication and team work skills.

*Physical Requirements: *Work involves constant standing, stooping, walking, pushing food trucks, frequently lifting and moving objects weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally lifting or moving objects more than 40 pounds. May be required to perform heavy work such as scouring and scrubbing equipment, moving heavy carts, working on safety ladders, and using power-cleaning equipment. Mental & emotional stability required.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a hospital setting. The employee is exposed to extreme temperatures because of steam and heat from cooking and dish washing equipment, and within the walk-in refrigerators/freezers. The area is usually noisy and there is constant danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been spilled or from mopped floors. The employee is subject to minor injuries such as cuts and bruises and therefore must exercise caution at all times to minimize injury to self and staff. Employees may come in contact with various chemicals within service. Employees may also come into contact with various types of patients including geriatric patients, emotionally disturbed patients and patients with infectious diseases.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
