Work Unit Description

The purpose of this position is to provide specialized medical nutrition therapy to pediatric patients with congenital and/or acquired diseases of infancy and childhood. This position primarily provides ketogenic diet therapies to pediatric patients and the occasional adult patient, using the nutrition care process of assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and monitoring and evaluation to reduce morbidity and mortality due to malnutrition, and to promote wellness. This position is responsible for all new ketogenic diet initiations and ongoing in person and telephone monitoring and intervention. This position also provides consultation to adult dietitians on the management of ketogenic patients, admitted for other medical/surgical reasons, when admitted to the hospital. As with all positions at OHSU, other pediatric medical/surgical patients may be assigned to be covered as staffing levels dictate.

  • Schedule: Day Shift Monday - Friday; Work every 7th Weekend
  • Salary Range: $32.19 - $44.20 per hour

Functions/Duties of Position

Responsible for the comprehensive nutritional assessment, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention, and nutrition monitoring and evaluation of medical/surgical and other patients on assigned patient care units considered at nutritional risk or in need of a change in mode of feeding secondary to food intolerance, malabsorption or medical condition. Assessments are developed from defined clinical criteria/data and are documented in the patient's medical record. Develops nutrition care plans to manage nutrition care for particular disease, prevent complications, reduce morbidity and mortality due to malnutrition or change in feeding modality. Monitors progress of patients on implemented nutrition plans.

Job Requirements


  • A Bachelor’s degree with specialization in dietetics, nutrition, institution management, or a closely-related field and completion of an pre planned professional experience in dietetics at an approved facility
  • One year pediatric dietitian experience
  • Nutrition Specialization Certification (e.g. CSP, CSNC)
  • Must be proficient in the nutrition care process
  • Must be able to determine the nutrient requirements of the adult inpatient and outpatients to ensure adequate nutrient intake and/or replacement of nutrients loss secondary to medical condition
  • Determine the nutrient make-up of patients meal patterns and medications (dosage and timing) that affect nutrient and/or drug bioavailability
  • Determine malnutrition and recommend and administer medical nutrition therapy to improve digestion, absorption and metabolism of nutrients
  • Make recommendations concerning adjustment of some medications that relate to nutrition, in order to promote increased well-being of the patient, maintenance of acceptable blood chemistries, increased bioavailability of drugs, decreased hospitalization days, and cost-effectiveness of regimens
  • Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration
  • Licensed Dietitian with the State of Oregon
  • Day Shift; Monday-Friday; work every 7th weekend
  • Shares office with 9 other dietitians/dietetic technicians
  • Must be able to carry up to 15# (on case of formula)
  • Must be able to walk long distances between buildings
  • Must be able to stand, sit, and change positions through out the day
  • Must be able to use computers, calculators, skin fold calipers, stadiometer, scale
  • Perform nutrition focused physical exam after competent
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation


  • MS in Nutrition or related field
  • 2 years pediatric experience
  • Experience with ketogenic diet
