The incumbent serves as a clinic patient advocate by answering patient inquiries and resolving patient concerns at a local level. This Part-Time WG-04, Cook position is assigned to the Nutrition & Food Service (NFS) of the VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) in Portland,* Oregon*. The incumbent may be assigned duties in Advanced Food Production, Food Service, Nourishment area, Ingredient Control Room, or Communication Desk Center. The incumbent performs tasks with several steps or a sequence of tasks that require attention to work operations and follows established procedures. In these assigned areas, the incumbent provides patient care appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and cultural and age specific needs of the adult and/or geriatric patient.

This announcement is not intended to cover all of the duties, qualifications, or responsibilities of this position. Duties for the WG-4 Cook include but are not limited to:

  • Food preparation and service.
  • Cooking responsibilities by preparing and cooking that require little or no processing, prepares puree diet foods and convenience foods.
  • Preparing all kinds of hot cereals, broils meats, prepares and cooks concentrated or dehydrated soups, gravies, and sauces, prepares foods on the grill and makes cold sandwich fillings.
  • Preparing food by peeling, chopping, grinding, cutting, slicing, dicing, pureeing, flouring, breading and paring.
  • Preparing all fresh fruit and vegetables and combines ingredients according to salad recipes.
  • Preparing fresh cut or frozen vegetables and simple desserts. Mixes ingredients according to written recipes.
  • Apportioning food items into standard serving sizes.
  • Delivering meals trays to patients if assigned.
  • Working any assigned station on the tray line.
  • Washing dishes, silverware, pots, pans, and serving utensils.
  • Covering the Ingredient Control Unit when assigned employee is on leave by issuing, receiving, inspecting and storing food and supply items.
  • Accurately performs final tray checks using knowledge of therapeutic diets.
  • Adhering to all food safety/sanitation principles related to food/supply as outlined in the HACCP Program.
  • Preparing individual and bulk nourishment for patients and units and prepares special feedings for patients as required.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: You will stand move about on the tile floors or most of tour. Frequently stoops, bends, twists, reaches, lifts, and carries food and kitchen equipment. Hand dexterity is necessary in the utilization of machines used to prepare food. May need to lift up to 40 pounds unassisted or more with assistance. Mental & emotional stability required.

WORKING CONDITIONS: You will be responsible for following defined safety rules to avoid hazards associated with the operation and cleaning of steam and electrical equipment used in Nutrition and Food Services. You must use proper procedures in lifting and moving heavy objects to avoid bruises, strains, and other injury. Must be alert to avoid falls on wet floors, burns and scalds from hot foods and equipment, cuts from knives and other equipment, and injury from improper use of chemicals. Must have ability to work rapidly, yet efficiently to meet meal schedules and time frames. Works in area subject to change in temperatures when required to enter refrigerators or freezer. May be exposed to contagious diseases while in patient care units. Must be neat and clean at all times and follow standard set for proper uniform.
