LOCATION: The position is located in the Salem District Office, 1750 McGilchrist Street SE, Suite 110, Salem, Oregon. This location offers flexible work schedules. One or more positions may be filled,.

In order to be eligible for ICTAP, you must occupy or have been separated from a position in the same local commuting area at the GS-11 level or higher; or on a career ladder position leading up to a GS-11 or higher.

This position is being filled on a permanent full-time basis.

The full performance level of this position is GS-11.

Duties

Claims Representatives conduct interviews and help claimants develop their claims for retirement, survivors and disability benefits and/or supplemental security income. They work with claimants to establish their continuing eligibility for payment, assist claimants in filing for administrative appeals, adjudicate claims and authorize them for payment, provide referral services, and identify and investigate potential program abuse.

Qualifications

Must be met by the closing date of the announcement:

For GS-5: Three years of general experience, one year which was equivalent to the GS-4, that demonstrates the ability to 1) analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions; 2) plan and organize work; and 3) communicate effectively orally and in writing. Examples of general experience include providing information and assistance to the general public analyzing, explaining, applying or interpreting laws, rules, regulation or policies.

For GS-7: Fifty-two weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include assisting individuals in filing applications for financial assistance, unemployment, veterans' benefits, insurance benefits, health benefits and/or social service programs; developing, processing or authorizing claims; or evaluating benefit program policies, procedures and guidelines.

NOTE: Your resume must indicate both a beginning and ending date and the number of hours worked per week for each position you've held.Your beginning and ending dates must include a month and year, and you should not use a range of hours (i.e. 20 - 30) to indicate the number of hours per week you worked. Part-time work is prorated in crediting experience (e.g., if you work 20 hours per week for a 12-month period, you will be credited with 6 months of experience).

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR:

MEET AND DEAL PANEL INTERVIEW- Applicants will be required to participate in a panel interview (after basic eligibility determination) to demonstrate an aptitude for meeting and dealing with the public. Applicants must pass this interview process in order to be found fully qualified for this position and receive further consideration for selection. This interview will cover typical situations, which might be encountered on the job, in person or over the telephone. Applicants must demonstrate qualities such as clarity of speech, ability to listen, ability to establish confidence and put others at ease and the ability to organize and express thoughts clearly. If you do not pass the Meet and Deal panel interview, you will not qualify for the job.

For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in any field leading to a bachelor's degree. One year of study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.

For GS-7:One full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement. Superior academic achievement is based on:

  • Class standing in upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision; OR
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher out of 4.0 based on 4 years of education, or based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher based on the average of all the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR
  • Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society that meets the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies (except for freshman honor societies). NOTE: Education completed in a foreign institution must be certified as equivalent to coursework completed at a U.S. college or university. It is the applicant's responsibility to acquire U.S. Certification and provide it at the time of application.
