Job Summary/Purpose:

Support academic success of the College students. Provide personalized attention and offer own pace learning to enrolled students within the College district. Terms of Employment:
• This is a part-time (<.50 FTE) Temporary Hourly/Non-Benefited position • Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district when needed. • Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

Essential Functions:

Provide customer service in person, including the following:

  1. Provide in-person secondary learning support in related subject areas, and set tutoring goals with students for individual tutoring sessions.
  2. Tutor students in Chemistry, Biology, A&P, Physics or Engineering to support instruction.
  3. Consult with student instructors, when necessary, to become familiar with, the curriculum to be supported.
  4. Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform these essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.

  1. Skill in the operation of modern office equipment, software systems and standard office equipment, internet searches, Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and systems or software unique to the assigned area.
  2. Knowledge of business English, spelling, math and vocabulary.
  3. Knowledge of general College and departmental procedures and inter-relationship between the various agencies.
  4. Skill in providing customer service to a diverse audience through a variety of media.
  5. Skill in anticipating and providing administrative support services in a broad range of areas within in an assigned area.
  6. Skill in problem-solving, multi-tasking, and time management.
  7. Ability to provide technical guidance accurately to customers, students, staff, and the general public.
  8. Ability to compose correspondence with only general instructions.
  9. Ability to communicate effectively with public, COCC staff, third party service providers, and others.
  10. Ability to display patience in interactions with students and community visitors who do not have experience with the educational process.
  11. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using English language with or without the use of auxiliary aids or an interpreter.
  12. Ability to develop cooperative working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds and other aspects of human diversity.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Working hours are regular, per the established work schedule. Work is performed in an ordinary office, mostly sitting. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature with the ability to sit or stand at workstation for extended periods. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. Grade B+ or better in the courses you tutor. Faculty recommendations or unofficial transcripts proving subject competence upon hire.
  3. Accurate arithmetic, grammar, spelling, editing and proofreading skills. The College recognizes the value of skills and knowledge gained outside of formal higher education and paid employment. Applicants who do not meet minimum qualifications but present other qualifications or experience equivalent to those required will be considered and are encouraged to apply. To qualify under equivalency, applicants must indicate how they qualify by responding to the supplemental question presented during the application process.

Preferred Qualifications:

Desirable Qualifications: • Familiarity with COCC curriculum in subject to tutor. • Customer Service experience.
