Job Description:

PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Employee Health Nurse is a Registered Nurse who provides direct and indirect nursing care for OMG employees, with particular emphasis in the area of occupational health and illness and injury prevention. The Employee Health Nurse utilizes established protocols and current standards of care to meet the wide variety of health care needs of the OMG employee population. This individual has oversight over all infection control and prevention related activities within the organization. This individual will also be responsible for all functions of the employee health program and for providing clinical employee health services.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of body motion, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Working conditions may be stressful at times. Occasional exposure to communicable diseases and fluids.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Combination of office and clinic settings. Occasional exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.


  1. Responsible for providing Employee Health Services to employees for occupational or non-occupational injuries and illnesses; provides safe, competent and efficient nursing care for minor and acute injuries and illnesses via protocols and medical directives; acts as an advocate for the rights of employees by ensuring access to preventative health and safety measures; documents all care required by policy, regulation or statute in a timely and effective manner; documents employee visits thoroughly and accurately; maintains and ensures confidentiality of patient information and medical records.

  2. Works closely with management, Human Resources, Quality Officer and others to ensure that all health and safety standards are met in an effort to safeguard the health and wellbeing of employees;

  3. Supports the disability case management and return to work process for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses; May review medical information to advise on support/non-support for absences due to medical reasons; Partners with Human Resources to monitor employee work-related illness and injury trends and assesses, develops and implements strategies to prevent work-acquired injury or illness and expedite return to work;

  4. Performs blood borne pathogen exposure assessment, treatment and follow up; safely administers and appropriately documents all immunizations and TB skin tests given to OMG employees per protocol and oversees surveillance programs designed to identify and monitor risks to the employee’s health; performs communicable disease exposure follow-up.

  5. Lead infection prevention and control education of all employees during orientation and annually thereafter, including classes in infection prevention and control practices and employee health; Ensure the infection prevention and control procedures meet CMS, DNV, county and state, APIC and CDC regulations, standards or guidelines; Responsible for coordinating the infection control program which includes surveillance; analysis of data; developing reports, policies and procedures; Use epidemiological principles and statistical methods to design, implement and evaluate infection prevention and control strategies;

  6. Provides orientation and training for OMG employees in the areas of employee health and safety. Develops and facilitates required trainings for Hazard Communication, Bloodborne Pathogens, Ergonomics and Accident Prevention; Coordinates OMG’s annual flu clinics and maintains compliance with government regulations (JCAHO, OSHA) and supports activities that contribute to patient satisfaction and positive health care decisions.

  7. Serves as OMG’s Safety Committee chair and expert in the area of Occupational Health and Safety; provides consultation and resources to the organization on healthcare worker safety. Coordinates safety committee activities including site inspections, accident analysis, etc.

  8. Develops and administers a facility-wide, Respiratory Protection Plan (RPP). Performs N95 Annual Fit Testing (or PAPRs)

  9. Provide Physician/APC/NP CPR/BLS required training

  10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience and Skills:

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with internal and external customers, occasionally in emotionally charged, highly confidential situations. Ability to manage people effectively, providing regular performance feedback and encouragement. Ability to translate OSHA regulations into functional policies and procedures. Ability to self-manage, including prioritization of tasks and goal setting. Must have the ability to initiate, facilitate and moderate staff training sessions for all professionals. Must demonstrate independent thinking and decision making skills in a complex and changing environment. Must demonstrate skills in collaboration, teamwork, and problem-solving to achieve goals. Must demonstrate a high level of integrity and trust. Must demonstrate knowledge of HIPAA. Excellent technical writing and proofing skills. Must possess and maintain up to date knowledge of current state and federal occupational health requirements for healthcare workers (OSHA, NIOSH, CDC and OR state law).
Maintains excellent written and oral communication skills. Computer proficiency to utilize standard MSOffice software, as well as applications, electronic communications and other software systems and applications in support of the employee health program. Ability to embrace principles of quality improvement, and desire to strive to be the best and work continuously to improve performance and exceed expectations. Ability to identify quality improvement opportunities and works to improve employee health processes and outcomes.

EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with BS degree in Nursing. Certification in Occupational Health, Infection Control or Employee Nursing preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Requires a minimum of three years of professional nursing experience. A minimum of two (2) year’s experience in Occupational Health, Infection Control or Employee Health preferred. Prior employee/occupational health experience preferred; experience working in either an employee health clinic, infectious disease or internal medicine clinic preferred.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Possession of a current Oregon RN license required. Healthcare provider level CPR certification required. Preference for American Board for Occupational Health Nurses (ABOHN) or American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) certification
