Without technical supervision, performs the most complex machining of parts and tools, typically on one or more machines, and can be relied upon to handle the one-of-a-kind, most difficult assignments. Sets up and operates all available machine tools and performs progressive machining operations on work involving close tolerances or unusual requirements. Understands qualities of metals and alloys and applies that knowledge to parts being machined. Understands and comprehends all forms of technical documents including: blue prints and drawings, written specifications, charts, tables, etc.
Skillfully uses all machinist hand tools and measuring instruments. Fits and assembles components as necessary. Will set up and lay out own work from blueprints, sketches and written specifications according to requirements. Must demonstrate effective verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills and, at this level, will serve as a technical resource for less skilled or experienced machinists.
Requires strong math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including decimals and fractions. May also be required to effectively use personal computers, data management systems and software.
Will exercise maturity and good judgment and set an example for newer and/or less experienced coworkers. Must maintain a track record of high quality work with low rework and scrap history. Will maintain high efficiencies and run rates for given machine.
Will work safely and as part of a team.
High School diploma required. Journeyman-level machining experience, training, licenses and/or certification is preferred.
Minimum of 8 to 10 years related experience, training, licenses/certification or demonstrated ability to perform described position responsibilities.
Moderate physical effort consisting of standing, twisting, bending and frequent lifting, moving or turning average weight material is required. Must demonstrate visual acuity and manual dexterity .
