Job Description

Are you a hands-on hardware security researcher who also have a strong conviction in making product security assurance easy for designers and validation engineers? Are you passionate about pathfinding new methodologies for hardware security assurance and automating complex techniques to enable broader adoption in raising product security robustness? Are you usually one of the first who develops empathy with users in learning/using a security tool and have insights to ease their ramp?

The Intel Product Assurance and Security (IPAS) is looking for proven, hands-on security researchers who have a passion to perform path-finding research in hardware security assurance automation tools and methodologies. We are looking for candidates who have deep product security understanding, solid secure development skills, along with expertise in one or more domain knowledge that advance the state-of-the-art in security verification of hardware (e.g., formal methods, machine learning). Experience in Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tool development that handles complex RTL code base is highly desirable.

The IPAS organization is responsible for implementing and operationalizing proactive security and risk-prioritized measures for all of Intel's products. The team is chartered with understanding the next generation of security threats and technologies, while guiding future research and architecture decisions to secure Intel's platforms, while fostering a security first culture into Intel's product development and strategic practices.

The ideal Offensive Security Researcher candidate should possess:

  • Ability to work autonomously in a less structured startup type environment with minimal supervision

  • Passion for security research and community impact, demonstrated by published research and collaboration to community efforts

  • Ability to span security expertise over HW, SW and Firmware domains

  • Possess independent research skills and mindset

  • Ability to comprehend/integrate large hardware/software code base quickly, while being very comfortable to develop prototypes and conduct experiments in a fast pace manner.

  • Solid interpersonal skills and effective communications as the candidates will work with different stakeholders across Intel to conduct tooling pilots and collect feedback to drive improvements.

Roles and Responsibilities include:

  • Leading or taking an active role in complex, multidisciplinary security research projects

  • Commands deep pervasive pulse on Intel business/technologies and emerging threat landscape in hacker community to prioritize offensive security research focus

  • Ability to navigate around ambiguities and obstacles to independently solve complex problems

  • Demonstrated expertise in vulnerability discovery, analysis and exploitation

  • Explores and invents software and hardware techniques as a method of attack against compute targets

  • Develops proof of concepts to characterize exploitability and impacts

  • Recommends systemic mitigations and demonstrates their robustness across a diverse portfolio of products

  • Leads automation pathfinding to improve security assurance capabilities of product teams

  • Shares expert insights and new learning and contributes intellectual property to internal and external communities

  • Demonstrates effective communication with executives and productive collaboration with peer researchers

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Minimum Bachelors’ degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related domain

  • 4+ years of experience (or equivalent) in the field of hardware system security research

  • 2+ years of development experience using C/C++ and SystemVerilog (or equivalent)

  • Demonstrated mastery of secure development practices

  • Understanding of complex software/hardware product design

  • Understanding of common security issues, mitigations and design best practices

  • Experience in tool development for automation in vulnerability research and verification

  • Knowledge of computer architecture, CPU, SoC, embedded firmware, and other compute paradigms

  • Ability to work autonomously in a less structured startup type environment with minimal supervision

Ways to stand out from the crowd

  • M.S. or PhD degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related domain.

  • Track record in research and publications on hardware security assurance automation tools and methodologies

  • Expertise in one or more domain knowledge related to security verification of hardware (e.g., formal methods, machine learning)

  • Experience in Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tool development that handles complex RTL code base

  • Experience in open-source project contributions and leadership

  • Track record in meeting/exceeding internal customer expectations from business unit stakeholders

  • Passion for security research and community impact, demonstrated by published research and collaboration to community efforts

  • Ability to span security expertise over Hardware, Software and Firmware domains
