The Yamhill County Sheriff's Office is recruiting for seasonal/temporary part-time Marine Safety Officers to work 12-40 hours per week to serve as the second operator on the boat and assist with boater safety through education and public assistance. This position works under the direct supervision of a marine boat captain and program manager deputy, and indirect supervision of the supervising sergeants and the division commander. Duties around and on the waterways of Yamhill County include, but are not limited to, performing safety inspections and examinations of various watercraft and equipment, responding to rescues, boating accidents, or other emergencies, and making appearances at safety fairs and other events. The anticipated duration of this position is approximately 4-5 months. Placement as a full-time or part-time MSO will be at the discretion of the Sheriff's Office Applicants must be a United States citizen at least 18 years of age. Must possess an unrestricted, state-issued driver's license with the ability to obtain an Oregon driver license, a good driving record, and a satisfactory work record and/or personal history (e.g., free of criminal convictions, although special circumstances may be considered). Preference will be given to qualified applicants who are cadets in good standing with a sheriff's office in Oregon or former cadets who served at least six months and left in good standing from a sheriff's office in Oregon. Applicants who possess current Lifeguarding certification, CPR/First Aid certification, and/or an Oregon Boater Education card; and/or who possess bilingual fluency in English and Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply. Must be able to pass swim standards as set forth by the OSMB and Oregon State Sheriffs Association. All candidates must be able to pass a thorough background screening. The successful candidates will possess good moral character, demonstrate strong customer service and communication skills, and put forth a professional image. They must be skilled, highly motivated, self-directed individuals with strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, as well as skill in communicating effectively during difficult and often stressful situations.
