The Division of Abdominal Organ Transplantation provides state-of-the-art care for patients with end stage liver disease, end stage renal disease, hepatobiliary and pancreaticobiliary disease, as well as patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The liver transplant program at OHSU was constructed by division chief Susan Orloff, M.D.; she and her team continue to expand the volume of transplants while improving survival rates and outcomes. The Division of Abdominal Organ Transplantation is active in research and education, and partners with the Division of Surgical Oncology to sponsor two hepato-pancreatico-biliary fellows each year.

  • Clinical Activities: General responsibilities will be to the clinical care of patients, both in hospital (Pre-operative care, ICU, and ward post-operative care) as well as in the outpatient clinics and outpatient care management primarily of the liver transplant patients but may include kidney transplant patients as well. Opportunities in the operating room will be on a case-by-case basis.

  • Direct Inpatient Care (Primary Responsibility) – care and follow-up of assigned patients from admission through discharge, work actively with the transplant surgeons, as well as the hospital/unit/case manager, inpatient transplant pharmacist and coordinator staff to implement discharge plans. Will assist with education of surgical house staff, HPB fellows, nursing unit staff, and transplant coordinators on service protocols, with the goal of enhancing quality of care and enhancing quality of patient services. Promote and maintain the health of service and excellent care to patients through the use of ancillary services.

  • Rounds –The APP will also be included in Attending Rounds with the Attending Staff, Residents/Interns, Hepatologist, Hepatology Fellow, Transplant/HPB Fellow, Transplant CNS, Transplant Pharmacist, and Transplant Coordinators.

  • Direct Outpatient Care - follow-up of post-surgical liver, kidney and kidney/pancreas transplant patients. Also evaluates new liver, kidney and kidney pancreas transplant patients. Will field telephone calls regarding all kidney, pancreas and liver patient issues, as needed, address clinical problems, and fill prescriptions. Follows up on ordering and checking labs and imaging studies on our transplant recipients. Will promote and maintain the health of service for transplant outpatients through the use of educational materials and counseling of patients and their families.

  • Procedures (Limited as needed) – The Transplant APP primary focus is in clinical care of the patients on the Transplant service. In addition, the Attending Staff may train the APP in the following procedures as seen fit. All procedures will be done under direct supervision until clinical competency is established.

  • Paracentesis – the APP may be trained to do paracentesis to be performed on a case-by-case basis.

  • Other duties include: Procurement, OR Support, Education, Teaching, Protocol development and revisions, Scholarly activities, and Research

  • Master’s Degree as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider role

  • one year clinical experience as an APP that demonstrates ability to fulfill responsibilities for the specific role

  • Experience in general surgery practices; ability to multi-task and prioritize; ability to work as a team member

  • Registration with the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners as a licensed Physician Assistant, or a Nurse Practitioner license from the Oregon Board of Nursing

  • Drug Enforcement Association certification
