General Description of Work

The Corporate and Public Relations Manager is a key spokesperson and relationship builder for Portland Rescue Mission. This role reports directly to the Director of Marketing and is responsible for amplifying our mission and building brand recognition through inspirational storytelling with a focus on increasing corporate support and public favor. The right candidate will have proven strategic marketing acumen and creatively diligent relationship-building skills.

Essential Functions

  • Continually help optimize our ministry narrative (giving hope and restoring life to people experiencing addiction and homelessness) through passionate storytelling for maximum partnership results while diligently monitoring the social and community trends around homelessness

  • Champion our ministry narrative to corporations, key media audiences and influencers in the Portland metro area through cultivating trusted relationships with corporate marketing decision makers, leading media contacts and influencers

  • Seek out and build new audiences and key partnerships to advocate for the work of PRM

  • Measurably and notably increase corporate partnership support from workplace giving programs, employee engagement partnerships and, especially, corporate financial sponsorships of broadcast media thons, special events, service delivery at various ministry facilities, and special projects

  • Grow and effectively manage a caseload of corporate relationships, ensuring each relationship is stewarded well and that an annual communication and solicitation strategy is in place, with goals, for each relationship

  • Actively engage in and document: robust networking efforts; prospect research and leads identification; tours; partnership proposals; face to face and phone solicitations; progress reports

  • Secure earned media publicity to illuminate our ministry narrative, as well as the Mission’s social enterprises, by taking the lead in developing news releases and guest articles; arranging interviews and tours; analyzing media coverage; discovering and pitching new outlets and contacts

  • Create professional briefing documents and talking points for Mission leaders and staff who serve as spokespersons

  • Routinely share learnings and brainstorm possibilities with the Marketing team and Mission leaders

  • Actively support the Mission’s external communications planning and preparation, including fast-developing issues and crises

  • Serve as a Mission spokesperson as needed

General Functions

  • Work under the management and direction of the Director of Marketing and function as an active part of the Marketing team, including participating in team-based efforts and projects

  • Embrace the Portland Rescue Mission ministry culture

  • Provide creative input as part of the Marketing team to improve overall performance of the Mission’s donor relations efforts

  • Seek ongoing training or enrichment opportunities around corporate partnerships and media relations

  • Serve a minimum of two hours per week in a direct ministry capacity at one of the Mission’s ministry centers

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • At least 5 years experience in philanthropy, public-private partnerships, sales or fundraising

  • Creative, strategic-thinking problem solver

  • Communicator; can tell our story in a fresh, clear and consistent manner using excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Connector; thoroughly enjoys mobilizing organizations and people around a mission using creative partnership strategies and strong interpersonal skills

  • Highly organized; a person who plans their work and works their plan

  • Solid understanding and experience with earned media publicity
