The Russell Street Clinic became an OHSU community dental clinic in 1974. The mission is to provide oral health care to the community; focusing on populations with specific needs such as the working poor and those living with HIV/AIDS. OHSU Dental Students and Residents and Dental Hygiene Students from 4 local programs also perform extramural rotations at the clinic. The clinic receives partial federal grant funding and contracts with local surrounding counties to provide dental care.
The Dental Hygienist, under the supervision of a licensed dentist, instruct hygiene students, dental students, and institutional staff on the techniques of oral hygiene and dental health. This position provides direct patient care in dental hygiene and renders preventive and therapeutic oral prophylaxis and promotes interest in the prevention of dental disease and demonstrates proper care of the mouth and teeth.
The appointee shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university’s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service.
Functions/Duties of Position
This position is under the supervision of the Director of the Russell Street Clinic. The duties of this position are in support of the missions, goals and objects of OHSU and the School of Dentistry and include: Participation in the education of residents and dental students. Specific responsibilities will focus on clinical and didactic teaching in dental hygiene at the graduate and predoctoral level, and providing direct dental hygiene patient care.
The general pattern of working hours corresponds with scheduled clinic hours, Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm. Deviations from this pattern may be necessary at times. Job duties include:
Dental Hygiene Education (50%): Instructs and demonstrates to patients or students of various age levels proper care of the mouth and teeth; promotes interest in the prevention of dental disease; instruct hygiene students, dental students, or institutional staff on the techniques of oral hygiene and dental health; Coordinates/supervises the Community Based Partnership Dental Education Training Program for all the dental hygiene students from partner Dental Hygiene programs as part of the HRSA Grant. Participates in the clinical/didactic education of dental and hygiene students providing appropriate oral care for HIV/AIDS clients in compliance with the HRSA Grant. acts as a back up to the Oral Health Care Coordinator for Ryan White HIV clients, nters information into CareWare as required, and attend local and regional meetings as needed for RSC Grant, Head Start, and community services.
Oral Prophylaxis (50%): Under the general supervision of a dentist, diagnose and treatment plan for dental hygiene services; removes calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth by scaling accumulation of tartar from teeth and beneath margins of gums using rotating brush, rubber cap, and cleaning compound; performs root planning and curettage; renders fluoride treatments and polishes exposed tooth surfaces using rotating cap and polishing compounds; applies sealants; applies topical anesthetic and desensitizing agents; administer local anesthesia; makes preliminary intra- and extra-oral examinations and charts conditions of decay or disease for diagnosis and treatment by a dentist; places or removes periodontal dressings; removes matrixes and rubber dams. May include some chairside assisting support.
- Licensed by the Oregon Board of Dentistry as a Dental Hygienist
- Graduate of a dental hygiene program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and endorsed by the American Dental Association (ADA)
- Experience with dental hygiene students instruction on techniques of oral hygiene and dental health of special needs patients
- Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association
- Experience as a hygienist in the last five years
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Public health experience
