Zapproved Director of Engineering, Quality and Infrastructure in Portland, Oregon

Zapproved is hiring a Director of Engineering to lead our Site Reliability and Quality Enablement teams on the journey to scalable, self-service infrastructure and tooling for integration, testing, and operation of our applications. Your mission in this role will be to fully realize the vision of a seamlessly integrated high quality devops practice at Zapproved. The ideal candidate will have a deep technical background, strong business acumen, and demonstrated experience managing diverse teams. You should also be comfortable working with a wide variety of stakeholders - from engineering to product to executives, and everything in between.

The SRE and QE teams at Zapproved are building the tools, frameworks, and disciplines of a truly automated development lifecycle. SRE's oversight includes core hosting infrastructure such as AWS EKS clusters, CI tools like TeamCity and Octopus, and logging infrastructure like Kibana. QE's oversight includes automated tooling and static analysis systems like SonarQube, and advising on risk analysis, test strategy, and quality processes.

What You’ll Do:

  • Mentor! You will coach, mentor and lead engineering managers as they build their teams and iterate on our culture, process, skills, and product.

  • Deliver constantly. Your customers are right across the aisle (or zoom link) within Product and Engineering, and your teams have the opportunity to iterate with near instant feedback! Use this to turn large initiatives into safe, small, fast experiments.

  • Provide strategic and technical leadership for your teams. As a seasoned leader with a SaaS operations and quality background, you'll use your experience in simplifying infrastructure, managing cost, analyzing and reducing risk, and create self-service engineering systems to build a great customer experience aligned with business goals and outcomes. You'll be the Product Manager for your teams, distilling the needs of the business into a roadmap they can execute against.

  • Measure and Improve. You'll define goals, metrics and measurements against, process and operational systems to guide improvements, inform decision making, and surface progress to cross-functional engineers and leaders.

  • Use all the tools at your disposal. This could be anything from rolling up your sleeves and diving into a coding or systems problem alongside your teams, to engaging with outside vendors and consultants, to implementing new systems and practices to remove blockers.

What You’ll Need:

  • 10+ years of experience developing SaaS software, distributed infrastructure, tooling, and/or test automation, with at least 3 years in a public cloud such as AWS, Azure, or Google

  • 6+ years of experience hiring and leading development teams, with at least 2 years managing engineering managers, preferably including remote/distributed teams, and at a startup or rapidly scaling software company

  • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management, release management, testing practices

  • Experience measuring, monitoring, deploying, and operating a 24x7 software or service

  • Experience leveraging Agile methodologies and tools to plan work, measure progress against a roadmap, accelerate decisions/outcomes and minimize risk

  • Business acumen and ability to foster relationships with customers and stakeholders across the company.

  • A passion for building a productive and inclusive environment that will attract and retain top talent

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills; Strong attention to detail

  • You thrive in ambiguity and are able to plan from strategic goals to tactical milestones

  • A desire to continuously learn and improve for both yourself and your teams
