The mission of the management of Underwriting, through the leadership of an underwriting team, is to help facilitate and foster sound underwriting and business decisions, develop effective relationships and contribute toward the growth and development of the underwriting department in an effort to sell, grow and retain long term profitable business. This is accomplished by managing the day to day production activities of the team, training and developing the underwriters and regular communication between our sales organization, other parts of the organization and their team members.

Below are typical functions of the Directors, Underwriting management. Actual responsibilities may vary based on the business segment and the level of the position.

Risk Decisions

Work with their team members to develop the skills and abilities to apply sound, creative underwriting and business judgment in the timely analysis and evaluation of insurance risks to contribute to the growth and profitability of the organization.

Customer Service

Develop and maintain effective working relationships with assigned field personnel, producers, assigned policyholders and Home Office personnel through professional negotiation, responsive communication, problem resolution and anticipation of customer expectations.

Mentoring and Training

Provide mentoring and training to their team members, other underwriters and other interested parties, i.e. sales personnel, producers, other ISG teams.

Projects and Special Assignments

Actively participate in projects as well as provide team members to participate in projects to contribute to corporate goals.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in business and/or five years progressively responsible work experience with emphasis in underwriting or similar analytical capacity.

ACS, FLMI or CEBS preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

Strong understanding of risk analysis and underwriting philosophy, including experience analysis; ability to lead, motivate train and develop an underwriting team and Manager, Underwriting to achieve overall business results for assigned block of business; analyze detailed written information for accuracy and completeness; express ideas clearly both in written and oral communications, strong customer service orientation, and excellent time management skills. Demonstrated ability to make good decisions and then utilize negotiation skills to achieve overall desired result. Also, demonstrated ability to utilize customer service skills. Aptitude for Microsoft Office Suite.

Job Complexity & Judgment:

Manages a team that underwrites and evaluates risks ranging from limited scope and routine in nature up to the most complex Mid-Market cases. Responsible for leading the Manger, Underwriting who oversees the day to day team operations of Underwriters, Associate Underwriters and Rating Analysts. Exercises independent judgment and discretion. Applies appropriate underwriting guidelines, procedures, contract provisions, state insurance statues. Requires analysis and evaluation of multiple factors to resolve complex issues. Identifies and makes recommendations for new processes or procedures that impact the department. Responsible for achieving the financial and customer service goals for the assigned block of business.

Independence & Supervision required:

Typically plans and schedules own work and requires limited direction. Analyzes the "big picture" and makes decisions accordingly, even when limited information is available.

Interaction & Influence:

Contacts are companywide as well as external to provide or obtain information. Will routinely consult with senior management. Networks with internal and external key contacts. Negotiates and influences others within the department. Develops and implements assigned team business plans. Motivates team members by developing shared purposes and goals. Effective mentor and team player.
