Work Unit Description

The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) at Oregon Health & Science University supports educational excellence at OHSU. The TLC provides the entire OHSU learning community with expertise and innovation in educator development, learning technologies, curriculum design and assessment. The TLC currently has a staff of nine instructional faculty with higher degrees in education or related fields who are committed to the success of OHSU’s students and faculty. To promote excellence in teaching, the Center seeks to:

  • Develop and improve teaching skills that can be observed and measured
  • Encourage a view of teaching as a serious form of scholarship and important intellectual endeavor
  • Cultivate an institutional climate that values, rewards, and renews teaching excellence
  • Promote integration of new ideas and effective pedagogy into courses, programs, and curricula

The TLC also supports students as they adapt their study and personal habits to the demands of being a student at OHSU by assisting them with study skills, motivation and goal setting, and active learning strategies, test taking skills and test anxiety, time (self) management, and preparation for Boards. The TLC also provides coordination to assist students in identifying services at OHSU that help them achieve their educational and personal goals.

Functions/Duties of Position

This position reports to: Director, Teaching and Learning Center

The duties of this position include:

  • Consult and collaborate with faculty in the design and development of learning initiatives that include interactive, multimedia, and digital technologies
  • Design and deliver workshops to introduce faculty to the effective use of technology to support teaching and learning in the health professions
  • Research and disseminate best practices in technology-enhanced teaching, learning, and assessment to support faculty in teaching and research endeavors
  • Collaborate with instructional designers in the preparation of materials to support faculty needs for teaching and learning
  • Advise and consult with faculty, staff, and students technology needs to support the goals of curriculum innovation and the educational mission
  • Guide faculty in the design or redesign of learning goals, instructional strategies, and appropriate assessments for traditional learning environments as well as for future applications of blended, online, or Web-enhanced learning
  • Champion the use of innovative technology including a campus-wide Apple iPad initiative and support of an educator’s makerspace to create, adapt and personalize learning experiences that foster independent learning and accommodate learner needs

This position requires undivided effort at 1 FTE level.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology/Design or closely related field such as Adult Education or Adult Learning with an emphasis in using technology for instructional purposes
  • Experience in the effective use of a range of digital technology tools (Web 2.0, learning management systems, online collaboration systems) to support instruction, communication, and knowledge development

  • Excellent knowledge and use of Apple products such as the MacBook and iPad

  • Demonstrated ability to design and develop learning materials and innovative learning strategies through the use of digital media (audio, video, and web-based)

  • Demonstrated experience conducting workshop/training sessions for professionals

  • Demonstrated project management skills, with the ability to adapt and solve problems proactively and creatively

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, as well as comfort in delivering presentations in front of a professional audience

  • Proven ability to work as a contributing and collegial member of a team and coordinate activities with other units and departments

  • Demonstrated commitment to quality and innovation in instructional design to enhance teaching and learning

  • University/college teaching experience or faculty development experience in health professions education is desirable

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at the university

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Educational Specialist or Doctoral degree, or progress toward advanced education in Instructional Technology/Design or closely related field beyond the Master’s degree level
