Oregon Health & Science University Genetic & Epigenetic Research Assistant 2 in Portland, Oregon
The Epigenetics Core is a service core that promotes and facilitates epigenetic research at OHSU by offering methylation and chromatin based techniques as well as bioinformatics support. The Carbone Lab studies chromosomal rearrangements and transposable elements in evolutionary and disease contexts.
The Research Assistant II will provide support with genetic and epigenetic research for the Epigenetics Core and Carbone Lab. This is an ideal position for someone eager to learn multiple techniques and engage with researchers from numerous disciplines. Responsibilities include:
Receiving and processing samples from Core clients and lab collaborators
Planning, conducting and troubleshooting molecular biology based protocols (such as Reduced Representation Bisulfite Sequencing, Chromatin Immunoprecipitation, sequencing library preparation, ATAC-seq, PCR, qPCR, cloning, and nucleic acid extractions and quality assessments)
Establishing and maintaining mammalian cell cultures
Record keeping, attending lab and core meetings, and engaging with clients and collaborators
Assisting with the general maintenance and cleanliness of lab space and equipment
Assisting in the set up and implementation of a new digital storage and tracking system.
Bachelor's Degree (4 yr) with major courses in field of research OR Associate's Degree (2 yr) and 3 years of relevant experience
General laboratory skills and knowledge of lab safety
Familiarity with basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR, nucleic acid extractions, cloning, and gel electrophoresis
Knowledge of sterile tissue culture technique
Excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills in both written and verbal formats
Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Ability to balance multiple ongoing projects with fluctuating priorities
General computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and project tracking software
Bachelor's Degree (4 yr) with major courses in genetics, epigenetics, molecular biology or bioscience
1 -2 years relevant experience
Proficiency with molecular and epigenetic techniques such as sequencing library preparation, bisulfite conversion, chromatin immunoprecipitation, and ATAC-seq.
Experience with mammalian cell culture
Previous customer service experience
