As a member of the Product Management Team, the Product Specialist is responsible for supporting marketing and sales processes for specific product categories. The Specialist serves as the liaison between suppliers, internal departments and Johnstone stores to answer questions and solve problems. The Product Specialist has a shared responsibility for the growth and sustainability of their respective product categories, and through mastery of the core functions achieves complete responsibility of assigned suppliers.

Position responsibilities:

  • Customer Service: Provides customer service and serves as a liaison between Product Management and stores, suppliers and internal departments by supplying information on products, promotions, programs, pricing, or directing them to the appropriate resources. Maintains timely, accurate communications with all stakeholders.

  • Supplier Programs: Reviews and negotiates proposed and current supplier programs to optimize overall effectiveness of products, prices, rebates, discounts, supply, and first to market opportunities. Compiles and completes analysis to assist the Manager in ranking and determining optimal and inferior supplier programs and performance. Designs and negotiates programs with suppliers ensuring sustainable growth and maximum return on investment.

  • Complete Product Portfolio: Assists in ensuring that Johnstone’s product portfolio is complete and aligned with strategic objectives by performing comprehensive research on product lines (market & technical) that contribute to stocking and marketing decisions. Assesses the degree of existing product success, investigates new product offerings, and provides complete information for decision-making purposes. Makes recommendations and in certain situations is the primary decision maker for adding or discontinuing products, supplier programs as a result of information gathered.

  • Promotion: Promotes assigned product lines in all available marketing vehicles. Reviews reports and obtains feedback from managers, stores, and suppliers to maximize effectiveness of materials. Writes product bulletins, catalog/flyer & electronic ads, department correspondence, supplier programs, and completes the necessary forms & paperwork ensuring completeness and accuracy.

  • Problem Resolution: Resolves problems that arise with a particular product line by identifying the source of the problem, and rectifying the situation based on information gathered.

  • Pricing: Evaluates and creates pricing for suggested sell pricing to maximize sales and margins, with support from the Product Manager and Pricing & Product Information Manager. Provides analysis and recommendation on forecasting for new products as well as promotional activities. Supports inventory management team through analysis of product lifecycle data and negotiates returns/rebalances/promotions to address inventory.

  • Industry Trends: Maintains and stays current with industry trends, knowledge, and product information from suppliers, trade publications, stores, and the Internet. Researches competitors and obtains other market information concerning the Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legislative and Environmental factors that affect our business.

  • Presentation: Able to present and prepare presentation materials, handouts and displays related to products, suppliers, industry trends and product marketing strategies.

  • Plans and Directs: Plans and directs activities in conjunction with the Product Manager.

Position requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; 2-3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of marketing principles, techniques and media (4Ps, SWOT, PESTLE, flyer, catalog, web).

  • Knowledge of basic business principles in entrepreneurial organizations (i.e. industry value chain, return on investment).

  • Ability to use a variety of tools and resources in conducting market research.

  • Skill in integrating information from a variety of resources to draw conclusions.

  • Ability to collect and use data to support decisions/recommendations.

  • Skill in designing creative and functional advertising pieces.

  • Ability to write clearly and effectively present ideas, decisions, or actions. Ability to write pieces such as product bulletins, advertising materials, and summaries or product research.

  • Skill in proofreading documents for accuracy; Ability to present information to groups.

  • Ability to interact with and maintain relationships with individuals from all organization levels.

  • Ability to establish effective, functional relationships with others (both internal and external to the organization).

  • Skill in influencing and leading others in a direction to achieve business goals.

  • Skill in tactfully obtaining information or assistance from other individuals in a timely manner.

  • Skill in providing accurate information, both positive and negative, to stakeholders.

  • Skill in managing projects: establishing objectives, securing resources, creating timelines, scheduling activities and resources, and evaluating project status.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks to ensure tasks are completed in order of importance and within deadlines.

  • Skill in resolving problems: asking appropriate questions, identifying problem source, devising alternative actions, and arriving and implementing the optimum solution.

  • Ability to develop and use internal systems for keeping track of and organizing information.

  • Computer application skills: Ability to use industry standard software including office products, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Enable PIM, Adobe Acrobat, Data Warehousing and ERP systems.

  • Expert skill in using Excel, including creating pivot tables, sorting, writing functions, formatting, creating charts, and analyzing large data sets.

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, and area; Skill in manipulating computer databases to find and organize information.
