Oregon Health & Science University Referral Specialist (PAS Resource Specialist) in Portland, Oregon

The Referral Specialist collaborates with the Managed Care and PAS Specialist teams in the areas of prior authorizations, financial screening, patient eligibility for services, and complex patient referrals. The Referral Specialist serves as the initial point of contact for referring practices and their staff to send patients to Dermatology. Through high-level triage, facilitation and problem solving, this position ensures that patient referrals and prior authorizations are complete to ensure scheduling efficiencies. This position will identify challenges and barriers of access for the patient and coordinate with the referring providers to ensure patients are seen in a timely manner.

This position supports the Department of Dermatology by providing exceptional customer service through prompt and professional communication skills, exceptional phone service, and excellent problem solving skills.

Schedules patients primarily through phone contact, gathers and records required information about patients; confirms health insurance coverage and individual’s obligations, obtains necessary authorizations for care, schedules physician office and ancillary appointments.

  • One year of experience in a medical office setting, including high-volume direct patient contact, scheduling of appointments and obtaining managed care authorizations

  • Thorough knowledge of PAS policies and procedures

  • Demonstrated advanced PAS user skills as well as extensive knowledge of integrated care at OHSU

  • Basic computer skills including word processing

  • Experience with Windows applications and online scheduling

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills

  • Strong customer service orientation

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in confrontational customer interactions

  • Demonstrable record of reliable attendance, punctuality, and successful performance with past and present employers

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology

  • Proficient in university network computer applications using Windows, Epic, and Microsoft Office

  • Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and urgent patient and system needs, and to work independently

  • Willingness to serve as a positive and professional role model

  • Basic computer keyboarding skills including typing of 30-45 wpm

  • Strong relationship building skills with patients, health plans, providers, staff, management and co-workers
