Oregon Health & Science University Research Assistant 2 in Portland, Oregon
This position will encompass physiology and cell culture experiments that include transfections, DNA, RNA and protein preparation and analysis, survival surgery in mice as well as tissue collection, mouse colony maintenance and ordering and maintaining lab supplies, chemicals, and animals.
Variable work schedule including evenings and weekends, but to equal 40 hours per week.
Carry out experiments in consultation with the Principal Investigator, troubleshooting technical difficulties independently. Experiments may include: General cell culture including primary neurons, protein expression and purification, DNA preps and transfections, RNA isolation and real-time PCR, western blots, and ELISA.
Genotype and maintain colonies of transgenic mice.
Histology/immunohistochemistry in tissue; microscopy/ imaging; quantification of innervation data or other parameters from images.
Whole animal studies; carry out survival surgery in mice including implantation of telemetry ECG devices, dye administration in heart and brown adipose tissue to label nerves. Assess physiological parameters including ECG, cardiac function (echocardiography), collect tissue for and perform RNA and biochemical analyses.
Bachelor's Degree with major courses in field of research/No Experience; OR Associate's Degree and 3 years of relevant experience
Knowledge of basic chemistry and physiology
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to exercise judgment in taking independent action, and seeking advice as necessary
Ability to be flexible, take direction, and willing to work evenings and weekends as needed
Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
Bachelor's Degree with major in physiology, neuroscience, or related discipline and 1-3 years of experience
Experience with cell culture, molecular biology techniques, and animal handling
Demonstrated creativity and problem solving ability
