Oregon Health & Science University RN, Pediatric and Neonatal Doernbecher Transport (PANDA), Resource in Portland, Oregon

PANDA’s scope of care includes patients ranging from premature newborns to pediatric patients up to the age of 18. PANDA is a specialty transport service for inter-facility transports. PANDA does not respond to scene calls. Patients over 18 are considered on a case by case basis and can only be transported to a pediatric unit. PANDA is accredited by The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services (CAMTS).

The OHSU Clinical registered nurse (RN) provides compassionate, evidence-based, and efficient care to individuals, families, communities and patient populations. The Clinical RN's care delivery is consistent with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics.   • External applicants: Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing Degree from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA)

  • Internal applicants: Associate's Degree in Nursing

  • Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License

  • BLS at time of hire and must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network branch of AHA (upload documentation with online application)

  • BLS must not expire during orientation or probation period, and must have the same expiration date (upload documentation with online application)

Department Specific Requirements (competencies, equipment, certifications, etc.):

  • 3 years Pediatric Intensive Care and/or Neonatal Intensive Care Experience required.

  • 5 years Pediatric Intensive Care and/or Neonatal Intensive Care Experience preferred.

  • For Resource Position: 3 years minimum experience on a neonatal/pediatric transport team, experience must have been within 1 year of application date.

Due to the independent nature of transport, it will not be infrequent that the PANDA RN and RT will run a code or a neonatal resuscitation without the in-person support of a Physician, therefore it is essential that there is context in which to put the education received in Advanced Life Support or Resuscitation course. Therefore, PANDA team expectations for having these certifications is different than the current OHSU process.

  • Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum: Within 1 year of hire for new transport personnel; at time of hire for those currently on a transport team.

  • Must pass pre-hire physical capacity testing.

Department Specific Preferences (competencies, certifications, etc.):

  • Critical Care Registered Nurse Certification

  • Certified Flight Registered Nurse

  • Certified Neonatal Pediatric Transport

Usual Orientation Time:

  • New Grads: Are not considered for PANDA.

  • Transport Specialty Experience: 3 months or less, dependent upon the number and type of transports experienced during this period, adherence to standards during these transports and approval from the PANDA RN or RT Lead, preceptor and manager.

  • Experience, but not in specialty area: 6 months or less dependent upon the number and type of transports experienced during this period, adherence to standards during these transports and approval from the PANDA RN or RT Lead, preceptor and manager.
