Job Summary:

Responsible for identifying, assessing and recommending actions for actual and potential exposures to the organization with a goal of improved patient safety and protection of the organization’s assets. Ensures adherence to government regulations and accrediting body standards and implements policies and procedures necessary to support risk structures and processes. Facilitates network, community, or Mercy Medical Center leadership in the design, development, implementation, and monitoring of the risk management program, including effective systems which promote and support patient, staff and visitor safety, medical malpractice prevention and the health of the organization, and that align with Common Spirit mission and values.

Essential Duties:

  • Coordinates and administers risk identification and reduction, monitors risk functions and performs risk assessments to assess loss potential. Supports, and ensures the implementation of the System risk management strategies.

  • Performs investigation and responds to events, potential claims, and grievances presented against staff, physicians and the organization for liability and damages. Records and collects documents and evidence and maintains work product in accordance with legal requirements and sets up claim. Ensures collaboration and mitigation of risk to the organization’s insurance coverage against liability and casualty loss.

  • Implements and maintains an organization-wide incident reporting system (IRIS) for incidents, occurrences, and accidents. Reviews data, identifies trends and opportunities for proactive interventions. Directs the investigation of incidents and provides analysis of the corrective action plan created with clinical leaders in order to ensure best practices, alignment with policies/procedures, and alignment with regulatory requirements/expectations.

  • Performs analysis of Risk Management data/information to ensure inclusion in decision making and in creation of projects/initiatives when trends/significance indicates. Communicates facility trends to leadership to initiate action planning, provision of data/information at huddle to emphasize need for reporting near-misses and events the organization is focusing on in their Top 10 list Recognizes employees who have submitted IRIS that have resulted in action/improvements.

  • Investigates unanticipated clinical outcomes, preventable significant clinical outcomes, regulatory complaints, and potential compensable events (PCEs) with collaboration/contribution/guidance to related processes. Rounds in a routine fashion to assist with determination and resolution of risks.

  • Conducts RCA/FMEA analysis or other proactive activities when high volume, high risk opportunities are discovered through incident report analysis. Organizes team of content experts, facilitates creation of standardized processes, and Identifies prevention and/or corrective action strategies and implementation plans.

  • Provides Risk Educational Programs to address events trending within the organization as well as national trends.

  • Investigates alleged EMTALA violations. Ensures that applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements are met in a proactive manner. Participates in development of processes/systems designed to share and recognize performance improvements and compliance across the organization to mitigate risks to patient and staff safety/risks to the organization.

  • Facilitates teams related to system-wide approaches for risk mitigation. Supports skills and competency development in risk management for community-based resources. With system team, designs training curriculum, develop program content and provide education to leadership teams, quality leaders, supervisors and staff.

  • Instruct SafetyFirst through formal and informal methods in order to ensure a highly reliable organization. Guides and influences the use of the SafetyFirst tools. Rounds in a routine/scheduled fashion to assist with determination and resolution of risks.

  • Assesses liability and probability of legal action for potential notification of insurance carriers. Involves compliance officers, privacy officers and internal legal counsel when necessary.

  • Conducts regular audits to identify and manage risk as soon as possible. Works with internal and external auditors in risk evaluation and follow up. Performs risk assessments and inspects patient care areas. Reviews facility and equipment to assess loss potential. Takes steps to ascertain that risks are minimized through follow-up and actions on all regulatory/insurance survey report recommendations/deficiencies.

  • Increases focus on loss prevention by trending data, interpreting data and providing information to leadership for decision making processes and mitigating loss.

  • Identifies a calendar of drills and works with leadership to hold our leaders in shared services departments and provider office locations accountable.



  • None.


  • Three (3) years demonstrated relevant acute care experience encompassing risk management and project management.

  • Experience in outcomes measurement, data analysis and reporting, and management of clinical work teams in a healthcare environment.

  • Knowledge of practice and procedures utilized in effective claims/grievance and issue resolution preferred.

  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Personal initiative with the ability to lead people, especially in relationship to the medical staff, nursing and ancillary departments.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or in a health management field. If candidate is a nurse an Oregon RN license is also required.
